The impact of the New Year on our teeth - what should we consider?

The most important food components that negatively affects the health of the teeth is sugar.

During the New Year, special stress falls on the teeth, and one of the most important food components that has a bad effect on the health of the teeth is sugar. The more we consume it, the faster the number of bacteria in the mouth increases, which leads to tooth decay.

Sugar and dental caries

We have often heard that sugary foods are the leading cause of dental caries. You can read more about why in our blog.

During caries, the hard tissues of the tooth are demineralized and a cavity is formed after softening. There are a very large number of microorganisms in the human mouth, which multiply rapidly. The cause of caries is precisely these microorganisms, which are on the hard tissues of the tooth. A few hours after brushing your teeth, the number of bacteria can increase to a million, and any caries begins with the fact that favorable conditions for the reproduction of bacteria are created in the mouth.

Keep in mind that it is not the amount of sweets we consume that is critical for our teeth, but how often we consume them. Saliva takes time to neutralize the harmful effects of sugar. It will be less harmful to your teeth if you eat one bar of chocolate at a time than if you spread it out over different periods of the day. ‍

Although it is difficult to give up sugar and we cannot completely eliminate it from our diet, since it is present in many products, Aesculapius recommends limiting its consumption as much as possible and brushing your teeth after each meal. Remember that the most beneficial product for teeth is dairy products (of course, if a person does not have an allergy or a deficiency of milk-digesting enzymes).

Dairy products contain calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. These elements saturate saliva with useful substances, which has a good effect on dental health.

Why are the New Year holidays more dangerous for teeth?

‍We have already discussed the harmfulness of sugar substitutes, but it should be noted that frequent snacking is no less harmful - even if it is not just sweets - any food causes tooth decay.

And yet, how to ensure a healthy holiday season?

Eat sweets only during meals, if possible. But if you have to replace sweets with food, drink a glass of tap water with it.

After eating, brush your teeth or use dental floss. However, brushing your teeth twice a day (or more) is still the best way to keep your teeth healthy, and you can do this with a fluoride toothpaste.

Use mouthwash – especially if you suffer from bad breath, which can be a sign that your teeth are a strong ally of bacteria.

Consult our dentist, who will recommend on the spot which toothpaste you should use.

Balance sweets with a healthy diet – for example, just as sugar and acidic foods encourage the growth of bacteria, healthy foods actually suppress bacteria and even help clean your teeth. How? When you eat, you produce saliva, and this saliva cleans your teeth.

Note: Some healthy foods, such as nuts and walnuts, are hard foods and can cause tooth decay.

Avoid excessive alcohol consumption - alcohol consumption reduces saliva production - especially during sleep. So, excessive drinking accelerates tooth decay. Finally, the best thing you can do during the holidays is to make sure that after the New Year's parties, you schedule a visit to your dentist.
