When should we brush our teeth – before or after breakfast?

People are generally divided into two groups: those who brush their teeth before breakfast and those who do it afterward. As for those who don’t brush their teeth in the morning at all — we hope this article will change that habit.

Brushing your teeth after breakfast means your teeth are free from food particles during the day, giving oral bacteria less time to metabolize sugar, cause cavities, or damage your enamel.

However, if you consume acidic foods or drinks in the morning, it’s better to brush your teeth before breakfast. Brushing your teeth after consuming acidic items — such as coffee or fruit — can damage the enamel. For this reason, the American Dental Association recommends waiting 60 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth.

It’s essential to remember not to eat anything after brushing your teeth at night and to go to bed with a clean mouth.

Tips to keep in mind while brushing your teeth:

  • Brush twice a day for at least 2 minutes each time.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride significantly improves oral health.
  • Use the toothbrush that feels most comfortable for you.
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3–4 months — or sooner if the bristles are frayed or dirty.
  • Clean between your teeth at least once a day with floss, interdental brushes, and/or a water flosser. Without this step, many bacteria remain in the mouth and are often the cause of bad breath.
  • Instead of brushing immediately after eating, rinse your mouth with water. This helps remove food particles and harmful acids.
